Jung Suwon Martial Arts

For Children, Adults and Families

At Jung SuWon Martial Art Academy, the 4th Code of Ethics—Love—teaches us that before we can truly love others, we must first learn to love and respect ourselves. In martial arts and in life, self-love is what fuels our perseverance, strengthens our mindset, and helps us rise through challenges.

In her book Seven Steps to Inner Power, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim shares this reflection:

“We use the word love in so many different ways. ‘Oh, I love these flowers,’ we say. ‘I love that sunset,’ ‘I love your hairstyle,’ ‘I love the way that new app works.’ We say, ‘I love you,’ to our children, our spouses, our pets. But how often do we express love for ourselves and for who we are right now?”

Self-love isn’t about being self-centered—it’s about recognizing your worth and treating yourself with the same care and encouragement you offer to others. Just as we train our bodies to be strong, we must also train our minds and hearts to be compassionate toward ourselves.

Why Self-Love Matters in Martial Arts and Beyond

  • Confidence Over Fear

In martial arts, your toughest opponent is often your own self-doubt. Self-love helps you trust your instincts and step forward with courage, both on the mat and in life.

  • Grace During Struggle

Not every training session—or day—is perfect. There are moments of fatigue, frustration, and setbacks. Loving yourself means allowing space for imperfection, and recognizing that persistence is just as important as progress.

  • Self-Respect Builds Strong Foundations

Just as we show respect through bowing in class, self-respect is the internal bow we give ourselves. When we value who we are, we teach others how to value us, too.

  • What you focus on shapes how you feel and perform. When you dwell on negativity or self-criticism, it can drain your energy and weaken your resolve. But when you approach life with self-love and positive intention, your energy becomes a source of motivation, strength, and forward momentum.

Ways to Practice Self-Love Every Day

Use Kind Words with Yourself – Replace harsh self-criticism with affirmations and encouragement.

Celebrate Every Effort – Focus on progress over perfection. A small win is still a step forward.

Protect Your Energy – Set healthy boundaries and spend time with people who uplift and respect you.

Invest in Your Growth – Make time for activities that strengthen your body, sharpen your mind, and nourish your spirit.

Self-love isn’t about ego—it’s about empowerment. When you practice self-love through martial arts, you grow stronger not just physically, but mentally and spiritually, too.
